Every holiday season, Asheville transforms into a festive wonderland—but nothing captures the spirit of Christmas quite like the National Gingerbread House Competition at the iconic Omni Grove Park Inn. This event is one of the most charming, heartwarming, and visually stunning holiday experiences you can enjoy in North Carolina.
This year’s competition brought thousands of visitors, hundreds of jaw-dropping gingerbread creations, and a magical atmosphere that simply can’t be described until you walk through the historic hotel and smell the warm scent of gingerbread in the air.
Watch this Our awesome YouTube video tour:
From the moment you drive up the winding hill and spot the historic stone building, the holiday feeling hits you like a warm blanket. And once you step inside—past the rocking chairs, the crisp mountain air, and the festive front patio—your eyes jump immediately to the giant Christmas tree sparkling in the lobby.

It’s impossible not to stop and take a photo.
And that’s exactly where our magical Christmas adventure begins.
Gingerbread Competition Asheville NC
Walking through the entrance, the first thing you see is the towering lobby warm, rustic, glowing with golden lights. The Grove Park Inn already feels iconic, but during Christmas it becomes something entirely different: a real-life winter postcard.

To the right, sits the full gingerbread house façade built directly into the lobby—real edible pieces, real frosting, real candy, and even a real tiny bite missing from one corner, courtesy of a curious visitor. Holiday spirit everywhere.
The counter attached to the house sells festive drinks, hot chocolate, and of course: fresh gingerbread cookies.

Just behind it stands the grand stone fireplace, easily big enough to stand inside. Beside it rests a beautifully maintained old classic car that once transported distinguished hotel guests. Somehow, even the car looks more festive during this season.

By this point, you can already smell ginger, cinnamon, roasted sugar, and fresh greenery. You realize quickly—this is not just an event. It’s a full sensory experience.
Before starting the trail through the competition displays, we grabbed a map from the front desk. And trust me—you need it. The hotel is massive, with gingerbread creations tucked into corners, hallways, and hidden levels.

We followed the hallway toward the Heritage Ballroom, where the first displays awaited. And this is where the magic truly started.
