On preview night, Zoo Knoxville CEO Bill Street personally welcomed visitors.

He explained the significance of the show and how emotionally connected it is to the region—how this old sinkhole area was beautifully transformed into the attraction it is today.
Also present was Moment Factory’s lead creative director Mathieu Grainger, who explained how their team pushed creative boundaries to compress a full year of Smoky Mountain seasons into a single night.

Smoky Nightlights Zoo Knoxville
One of the most exciting moments of preview night was when University of Tennessee System President Randy Boyd addressed the crowd saying:
“We’re all really eager to see the show. Next year, we might even host a light-run marathon here—79 laps equals a marathon!”

This moment added even more excitement to the experience.
Smoky Nightlights is built in a special round layout inside Zoo Knoxville, with lanterns, projections, and ambient soundscapes guiding visitors along the entire pathway.
Smoky Nightlights Review
One of the first things that guests noticed in the show was the illuminated elk projections standing inside the forest.
The elk’s subtle movement, glowing antlers, and surrounding woodland visuals made the environment feel like the Smokies’ deep woods.

Many viewers said this was one of the show’s strongest highlights.
The Four-Part Smoky Nightlights Experience
The story of Smoky Nightlights is told through four seasonal chapters. Each part has a completely different mood and visual style.
Part 1 – Awakening
The show begins with “Awakening”—a soft dawn-like scene filled with Smoky Mountain blue haze and gentle musical buildup.
It creates anticipation and sets the tone for the rest of the experience.

Part 2 – Abundance
This is the most vibrant and dramatic part of the entire show.
Thunderstorms, rainfall, lightning flashes, and finally, the iconic rainbow sequence bring this chapter to life.
The lighting effect flickers through the walkway, making it feel like real raindrops falling.

Preview night visitors said this was their favorite part.
Part 3 – Harmony
This section features butterflies, synchronized fireflies, and owls through mesmerizing projections.
The show recreates the Smoky Mountains’ famous synchronized fireflies phenomenon, which many visitors found magical and calming.

Part 4 – Mystery
The final section is a moonlit valley scene.
Because of the 360° layout, the presence of the massive glowing moon and surrounding projections creates a truly immersive dreamlike environment.
The music becomes more emotional here, giving the show a peaceful closing moment.
