What’s new in the Smokies in October 2026? Peak fall color arrives from early October at high elevations and reaches Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge in late October or November. Sevier County schools have fall break from October 10 to 18, which makes that week the busiest. Two mountain coasters add scare actors on Friday and Saturday nights, Dollywood is open on Halloween, and a long list of restaurants and attractions in Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee, have opened, closed or are close to opening.

When is peak fall foliage in the Smoky Mountains in 2026?

Peak fall foliage in the Great Smoky Mountains is projected to run from early October through early November 2026, with elevation setting the schedule. The higher the elevation, the earlier the leaves turn.

ElevationExamplesProjected peak
4,000 feet and aboveKuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome), Newfound GapEarly to mid October
Mid elevationsRoaring ForkMid to late October
Lower areasGatlinburg, Pigeon ForgeLate October into November, possibly mid November

The late timing in the valley towns has a plain cause. The summer ran hotter and longer than in recent years, and cooler temperatures have been slow to arrive. Early October has brought clear skies and sharp mountain views from Sevierville, along with a welcome drop in temperature. The cooler air makes downtown Gatlinburg, the riverside paths and open-air attractions far more comfortable than they were over the summer.

Matching the destination to the date makes the most of the season. Early October suits the high-elevation national park overlooks, and the end of the month suits the valley towns.

When is fall break and how busy is the Smokies in October 2026?

Sevier County schools are out from October 10 through October 18, 2026, and that week is expected to be the busiest of the month. Arriving before October 10 or after October 18 avoids the heaviest crowds.

Outside fall break, October is relatively calm. The major car events, including the fall rod run and the Jeep Invasion, have already passed, so nothing particularly large on the calendar adds to traffic.

Weekends follow their own pattern. As the leaves approach peak, more visitors head to the mountains on Saturdays and Sundays hoping to catch the color. Downtown Gatlinburg shows the difference clearly. On a Tuesday evening in early October, the Hillbilly Golf course had no line at all. Deeper into the month, weekend parking in downtown Gatlinburg is expected to be much harder to find and the sidewalks much fuller.

What’s new in Sevierville in October 2026?

Walmart, Exit 407 and the Dolly Steps

The new Walmart in Sevierville is making quick progress, with trees and landscaping going into the parking lot. At Exit 407, the Gateway to Adventure area, little is visible yet. A water park resort has been announced for next year, though nothing appears to be under way on the site.

Downtown Sevierville keeps drawing visitors to the Dolly Parton statue. The town is her hometown, and the nearby theater hosted her first paid performance. Nine new Dolly Steps have been added around downtown as stops on a self-guided walk through her history. The QR codes are not fully operational yet, but all nine locations are in place.

Seven Brew coffee near Tanger Outlets

A new Seven Brew coffee shop sits beside the McDonald’s and CC’s Pizza near Tanger Outlets. A worker on site described the opening as about a month away, with final touches on the building and hiring and training still to finish. An opening at the end of October or the beginning of November looks likely.

New stores and fall decorations at Tanger Outlets

Tanger Outlets has added improvements over recent months, and the fall decorations are the most visible. A large pumpkin display makes a popular photo spot, and Hatfield and McCoy has a similar one. A scavenger hunt photo contest built around finding Harvest Hank is also running, with details on a QR code posted on site.

Two recently opened stores are worth a stop. Portland Leather, toward the back of the center, sells purses, bags, wallets and other leather goods, and the smell of leather is noticeable on entering. Kendra Scott, near the Gap Factory Outlet store behind the chop house, includes a Dolly collection on display.

Ripley’s Old MacDonald’s Mini Golf at Tanger has trick-or-treating on select nights in October, a combination that suits families with young children.

Rainforest Adventures Discovery Zoo and its lemur experience

Rainforest Adventures Discovery Zoo sits off Collier Drive in Sevierville, near the Governor’s Crossing movie theater, Fuddruckers and Texas Roadhouse. The zoo opened about 25 years ago as a collection of snakes and has grown considerably since. Reptiles remain a large part of the experience, and goats, including baby goats, can be fed outside.

The newest addition is a lemur experience where visitors enter the habitat and feed the lemurs. It costs $20 per person and is added on top of general admission. A new spot to grab a bite to eat has also opened on site. Sloth and otter encounters cost extra, and both involve feeding and close contact with the animals. The otter encounter proved a favorite among children.

For families staying in Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg, this zoo is much closer than Zoo Knoxville.

Where are the pumpkin patches and corn mazes near Pigeon Forge and Sevierville?

Kyker Farms and Oaks Farm are the two main options in the Sevierville area. Kyker Farms, a short drive up Douglas Dam Road, is open on select days in October with corn mazes, hay rides, a pumpkin patch and many other child-friendly activities. Its website lists the open days. Oaks Farm takes a longer drive but is one of the largest corn maze and pumpkin patch destinations in the area.

Other fall outings fit nearby. Circle Your Wagons runs at the Sevier County Fairgrounds on October 3 and 4. Zoo Knoxville hosts Boo at the Zoo on select nights throughout October, with fall decorations and trick-or-treating for children. Soaky Mountain has closed for the season and reopens in May.

What’s opening soon in Pigeon Forge?

Several Pigeon Forge projects are close to completion, though most still lack firm dates.

The Play District building is rising near the old Opry building, past Ripley’s Illusion Lab. Construction is visibly progressing, but the opening is not expected until next summer. Plans call for Hasbro brands including Nerf, Transformers and Peppa Pig, with several play experiences for children.

The former Hard Rock building next door is being completely remodeled for Giordano’s, known for its stuffed pizza, with an opening expected later this year.

Pigeon Toad Tavern, on the corner near Guy Fieri’s Downtown Flavortown, had hoped to open by the end of September and has not opened officially. An October opening seems probable. The tavern has a small patio and plenty of televisions for watching sports.

Dragon X, an attraction with mini golf and more, stands along the parkway near The Island. The exterior looks finished, with abundant lighting and a giant dragon mounted on the building. The interior is unconfirmed, and no official date has been announced.

Queso and Curry, a Tex-Mex and Indian fusion restaurant beside Rita’s Italian Ice, is already open. The layout resembles a Chipotle, with a counter where bowls, burritos and quesadillas are built to order, along with nachos and other customizable items.

What has closed in Pigeon Forge in 2026?

Several closures have changed the dining and attractions picture in Pigeon Forge.

Bobby Jack’s Barbecue has closed. The building previously housed a Fort Worth steakhouse that rebranded before the barbecue restaurant took over, and business volume appears not to have reached the level needed to keep it going. Signs have been removed from the building and the roadside.

Pizza Rio in Pigeon Forge closed as of September 6. A sign on the door points customers to the Gatlinburg location, which remains open, or to the other Brazilian steakhouse in Pigeon Forge. The Showplace Boulevard location sat well off the main parkway, a placement that likely kept it out of sight of passing traffic.

Sweets and Play near the Titanic Museum has closed after being shut for some time, and another restaurant nearby has closed too.

The Track, near Pink Jeep Tours, is set to close later this year. October may be the last full month to visit before the site is redeveloped into something new.

Skyland Ranch after the fire

Skyland Ranch is open in a limited form while the top of the property is rebuilt after a devastating fire. The safari hay ride is running. Several animals have been moved lower on the property, including miniature horses, a cow named Bucket, an animal named Dozer and some horses. The Wild Stallion Mountain Coaster remains open to ride.

No rebuilding timeline has been set because paperwork and insurance assessments are still moving forward. The chairlift is expected to reopen sometime in 2027, though that date is uncertain.

What are the best Pigeon Forge events in October 2026?

Pigeon Forge has the densest October schedule in the Smokies, spread across dinner shows, coasters, mini golf courses, craft fairs and Dollywood.

Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Feud

The Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Feud building has been taken over by spiders and pumpkin characters for the season. The show follows a new story, and the food closely matches the regular dinner menu. A pumpkin pie dessert has been added, and a graveyard scene features performers singing and dancing to a version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” The fall edition is billed as a feudin’ fiasco.

Rocky Top Mountain Coaster zombie nights

The Rocky Top Mountain Coaster has been taken over by zombies on select nights in October. The queue tells a story of zombies overrunning Pigeon Forge, and riders board an escape vehicle that travels through the mountains while watching for zombies along the track. Skyland Ranch owns the coaster, so it pairs naturally with the Wild Stallion Mountain Coaster for riders who want a spookier outing. [Internal link: Rocky Top Mountain Coaster Zombie Invasion post]

Pigeon Forge Racing Coaster

The Pigeon Forge Racing Coaster is decorated for Halloween with spooky displays, footprints on the ground and a cauldron near the entrance. The ride runs normally any day in October, and scare actors line the track on Friday and Saturday nights.

The blue track is the more tame of the two. The red track is considered scarier because it extends farther over the side. [Internal link: Pigeon Forge Racing Coaster post]

Rowdy Bears Boo Park

Rowdy Bears has been converted into a Boo Park for the season. An unlimited ride wristband is available, and trick-or-treating is part of the visit. Trigger Town has new lights added for evening visits, and a special event called Boo Bash runs on select nights.

Scooby-Doo Mystery Putt and Crave Mini Golf

Both courses at Scooby-Doo Mystery Putt are open, with ghosts placed around the course for Halloween. Crave Mini Golf is also decorating for October and hosting special events on select nights.

HallowMania Bash at the Hulk Hogan store

The Hulk Hogan store in Pigeon Forge is holding its first annual HallowMania Bash on October 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Treats and prizes will be handed out, and guests who dress as a favorite wrestler can enter a costume contest. Giant recreations of Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant stand inside the store.

The Island in Pigeon Forge

The Island has fall decorations throughout and a new Autumn’s Glow fountain show. The show runs a little shorter than the standard fountain performance and opens with a voiceover that sets a fall mood, with autumn colors and leaves arranged around the fountain. Parking is free, and a free trolley runs to the front of The Island.

Patriot Park craft fair

The 50th annual craft fair at Patriot Park, near the Old Mill, runs every day until October 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Dollywood Harvest Festival and Harvey’s Boo Bash

The Dollywood Harvest Festival runs through October. The park usually closes a little early and is normally closed on October 31, but it is open on Halloween this year.

Harvey’s Boo Bash is a brand new extra-ticketed late-night event priced at $130 per person. The scheduled nights are October 16, 23 and 30. Regular October offerings include pumpkin LumiNights, shows and a nightly dance party.

The new Night Flight Expedition ride has faced numerous challenges and has been closed quite often, so a visit planned around that ride carries some risk. Dollywood’s social media channels give the current status. [Internal link: Dollywood post, if available]

Where can kids trick-or-treat in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg on Halloween 2026?

The Island in Pigeon Forge is the safest choice for Halloween trick-or-treating because no cars drive through. The property is tucked away, parking is free, and the free trolley delivers visitors to the front. Fall decorations and the Autumn’s Glow fountain show add to the atmosphere.

In Gatlinburg, the Reagan Terrace Mall is the strongest option. Shop owners often hand out candy, and families walk the length of the mall in costume. A few cars pass through, so it is less secluded than The Island.

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies hosts a range of activities on its plaza on Halloween. That suits families who want something earlier in the day and an earlier return home for young children.

Ripley’s Old MacDonald’s Mini Golf at Tanger Outlets offers trick-or-treating on select nights, and Zoo Knoxville has trick-or-treating during Boo at the Zoo.

What’s new in Gatlinburg in October 2026?

A walk through downtown Gatlinburg in early October turns up fall decorations everywhere, with pumpkin people seated on benches and seasonal displays outside businesses. Businesses are encouraged to use artificial pumpkins so that bears do not wander into town to eat the real ones.

Which Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge coasters have scare actors?

The Moonshine Mountain Coaster in Gatlinburg and the Pigeon Forge Racing Coaster both add scare actors on Friday and Saturday nights in October. At Moonshine Mountain, spooky signs and clues line the queue, and the ride is considered great fun on a regular night and extra frightening on weekend evenings. Riders who prefer no scares at all may want to skip those nights. [Internal link: Moonshine Mountain Coaster post]

For a gentler option, the Ripley’s Mountain Coaster can be paired with the aquarium. The more Ripley’s activities are bundled together, the lower the cost per attraction.

Downtown restaurants and shops

Old Red’s Restaurant has musicians performing throughout October, and Jason Aldean’s restaurant sits farther along the strip. Tennessee Shine Company, a Harley-Davidson store across the road, several jewelry stores and more Ripley’s attractions fill out the same stretch.

The Gatlinburg location of Pizza Rio remains open along the water, serving a more varied range of pizzas than the traditional Chicago style.

Joe Brett’s Ice Cream has not opened yet. The shop looked unchanged from the previous month, and the hope had been for an opening by the end of September. October now seems likely.

Riley Green’s Duck Blind will not open this year. A billboard near Soaky Mountain had pointed to a 2026 opening, but the revised target is spring 2027.

Anakeesta Bearvarian Fall Festival

Anakeesta runs its Bearvarian Fall Festival through November 1, with tickets sold in person or online in advance. The festival brings fall decorations, entertainment and new food, and a chicken sandwich is a standout. A beer tasting card costs $22.99 and covers more than 40 beers. [Internal link: Anakeesta Bearvarian Fall Festival post]

The Village and the candy store

The Village has pumpkins throughout and a scarecrow wedding display. Fresh doughnuts come from the doughnut fryer, and the 27 unique shops make it an easy place to spend an afternoon as the weather cools. Nearby, the candy store is making taffy and has fall artwork on its exterior wall.

Sky Park and the Gatlinburg skyline

Sky Park uses an open chairlift to reach the top of the mountain, where visitors cross the SkyBridge. Fall music and decorations are set up at the summit, and live music drifts from Shamrocks, the rooftop bar. Anakeesta uses an enclosed glass gondola instead.

Across the street, Ripley’s Believe It or Not can be paired with an aquarium ticket. Other nearby attractions include Sugarlands, the Space Needle and Bubba Gump.

Haunted houses in Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg has two haunted houses. Ripley’s Haunted Adventure sits on the Parkway, and Gatlinburg’s Mysterious Mansion stands back from the river road. October is a very popular month for the Mysterious Mansion.

Craftsmen’s Fair at the Gatlinburg Convention Center

The Craftsmen’s Fair is held October 8 through October 28 at the Gatlinburg Convention Center. Admission requires a ticket, and the fair features locally made crafts.

Ober Gatlinburg

The name is returning to Ober Gatlinburg. Some Ober Mountain signs remain, though those are expected to fade away. The mountaintop has fall activities and seasonal food, and a wristband covers many of the activities at the top.

River road and Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies

The back river road is peaceful, with cool air rising off the water. The Peddler steakhouse is nearby and known for its salad bar. Hotels in the area still have outdoor pools in use before the weather turns too cold, and bears are frequently spotted in this part of downtown.

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies has pumpkins all around the building and a chainsaw octopus out front. The aquarium plaza hosts a number of activities on Halloween, which suits families wanting a daytime outing.
